Nippon Paper Industries and Elopak Collaborate on Sustainable Packaging

Norway's Elopak and Nippon Paper Industries have reportedly signed a comprehensive memorandum of understanding (MoU, a treaty dealing with smaller matters) that covers Further collaboration between the two companies on how to jointly develop and organize potential businesses based on their respective expertise, assets and networks.

Norway's Elopak is the world's leading supplier of carton packaging and filling equipment, providing sustainable packaging solutions that provide a natural and convenient alternative to plastic bottles. The MoU is in line with Elopak's ambition to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions by pursuing a growth strategy centered on investment in innovation; and driving the conversion of plastic packaging to paper packaging.

The two companies have worked closely together for many years. In March 2016, they signed a product license agreement allowing Nippon Paper Group to manufacture and sell certain Pure-Pak cartons in Japan. When Elopak was listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange in June 2021, Nippon Paper signed a cornerstone investment agreement to subscribe for Elopak's shares equivalent to 5.0% of its share capital.

According to the MoU, the two companies will establish a steering committee responsible for selecting and implementing cooperation themes, leveraging the strengths of both companies, while enhancing competitiveness and expanding sales of paper packaging to accelerate the development towards a low-carbon circular economy.

Both companies are members of the United Nations Global Compact and have incorporated the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their development strategies. They also work together on sustainable forest management and improving the recycling of their paper products.
